NUTRITION TIP

Trying to wean from whole milk to non-fat?  A middle of the road approach is to mix ½ glass of 2% milk with ½ glass of non-fat milk to get 1%.  Each DC glass holds approximately 16 oz, that’s 2 servings of dairy and approximately 600 mg of calcium, over half your daily requirement.

Balance Mind Body Soul is a holistic or integrated approach to wellness and fitness that considers the whole person.  Fitness and wellness are a balance of lifestyle choices and events - physical, mental and environmental.  It is not about fads or diets.  It is about maintaining balance in one's life.  Wellness is unique to each individual and knowledge is key.

Each month Sodexo Campus Services features a new range of topics which are available on site and in more depth at www.balancemindbodysoul.com

Also, there is a nutrition calculator within this site with which you are able to calculate the nutritional breakdown of your diet.

"Did You Know!" from Debi the Dietitian

Is the Freshman 15 fact or fiction?

No, say several studies on college campus-what a relief!  Average weight gain the first year of college is more realistically in the range of 4-6 lbs.

Reasons that weight gains occurs is multifaceted but observation shows that:

  • Activity level and/or exercise decreases and individuals who were active in High School sports are not participating in favorite sports as freshman.
  • Buffet style dining and all –you-can eat fares demand a conscious effort to choose healthier options.  Less healthy choices are often fried foods, double entrees and sugar laden desserts and beverages.  Opt for lower calorie items, single or half portions and have the high calorie foods less often.
  • Mindless eating tends to increase especially in the evening and can include eating for other emotional reasons as boredom, loneliness, or stress.  Late night eating can contribute to small weight gain over a period of time.
